Ava got this Live Butterfly Garden kit for her birthday, and I seriously think it's the best gift ever! Anyone who has kids 12 and under should definitely get one of these! (they have them at Target, but you can also order them online at www.InsectLore.com). I should have thought to take pictures of the caterpillars too... next time!! Here is our first butterfly, eating some of it's food. (they like sugar water sprinkled on cotton balls or flower pedals, orange slices, and watermelon slices).
Our weather has warmed up enough that we were able to release the 5 butterflies today. (you can keep them inside for their entire life cycle if you want, the average life span of a butterfly is 2-4 weeks)

3 of them seemed happy and content inside their little home
Here is a picture of the chrysalis shells that the butterflies were once inside of. It only takes the butterfly about 10-15 seconds to break out of that shell when it's ready to hatch (not sure that's the term...). And the amazing this is, we actually saw one of them come out. We were sitting in the living room looking at the 3 butterflies that had already hatched, and giving them some new food, when Cristian heard a crackling noise. And he said, mom, look, one of them is coming out. It happens so quickly, the fact that we happened to be right there when it emerged was just plain LUCKY!
We have some pretty butterflies in our yard now!
Cristian finally decided to try and coax out the last butterfly after it still hadn't come out after being "free" for 3 hours.

So neat. I am glad the present was a hit! We will definitley bne getting one as well. :)
What a fun activity for the kids. Our kids loved doing it with the neighbors. And once again, you got great pictures of it all!
What an awesome gift. The butterflies are beautiful, your kids must have taken good care of them!
